Becoming a Stronger Writer Through Writing Prompts

Writing prompts are an excellent way for students to become better writers. By giving them an idea, topic, or challenge, writing prompts can help students explore their creativity and develop their writing skills. They can also help students become more confident in their writing by allowing them to practice and refine their ideas before presenting them to an audience. Writing prompts can also help teachers assess student progress and identify improvement areas. With the proper guidance, writing prompts can be a powerful tool for helping students become stronger writers.

In 5th grade, Ms. Baltimore poses a weekly writing prompt to her students. For example, Olivia B. wrote an opinion piece about how students should NOT have homework on snow days. While we didn't get any snow, after reading Olivia's work, Ms. Baltimore said she was convinced! Read below and see if she's got you convinced too:

In my opinion, I think that kids should not have homework on a snow day. An off day is a time kids should be able to relax and have fun, not be cramped up with homework. First, I think that homework can be very stressful for some people, and it would be nice for them to be relieved from it for a day.

Even though kids should keep their minds sharp on what they're learning and try not to forget it, kids need fresh air, and a snowy day is a great opportunity to get outside. Homework usually keeps children inside for a long time, and by the time they're done, it might be too late to go outside.

Children shouldn't have to work on their homework (if they get any) during the day, just like a regular school day. I think kids could just do it at the time that they would do their school work. Therefore, I think that kids should not have homework on a snow day.
